Skin care and ayurveda

The principles of ayurveda recognizes that each person is unique. This theory is called Prakruti and refered to as the concept of Dosha’s. In Ayurveda there are three main doshas; Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth). Many people have one dosha predominating and these characteristics can be seen in a person’s physicality as well as reflected in the condition of their skin.

Ayurveda can be an invaluable tool for determining a person’s predominating dosha and how it relates to their skin type. This knowledge is pertinent to suggesting products that will have the best compatibility with particular skin types to create an optimally healthy complexion.

Vata: (Dry/dehydrated and premature aging skin types). Vata is characterized by two elements, space and air. The ancient ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita describes vata as being dry and rough, cool, light, always moving, broad, unlimited and unbounded. People with a predominating vata skin type tend to have dry, thin skin that is prone to premature aging, fine lines and is negatively effected by coldness. Therefore using botanicals, essential oils and other raw ingredients that are warming in nature, hydrating and nourishing are optimum. Indulging the skin in rich oils are very important to the person who exhibits these characteristics.

Pitta: (Normal/combination and sensitive skin types). Pitta is characterized by the elements of fire and water. People with a predominating Pitta type tend to have warm skin that is reddish or hypersensitive. Inflammatory skin conditions like Rosacea, breaks outs and broken capallaries are common for the pitta type skin. Cooling ingredients are essential to soothe, balance and alleviate heat and inflammation on the surface of the skin.

Kapha: (oily/congested skin types). Kapha is characterized by the elements of earth, water and heaviness. People with predominating Kapha type skin tend to experience break outs, congestion, black heads and oily skin. Ingredients that constrict the pores, alleviate oilyness and congestion are essential to alleviate conditions of heaviness on the surface of the skin.
